Exploring film+documentary from the independent scene in Dublin giving voice to new creative talents. Every month I will give a spotlight to independent work outside Ireland.
A nice refreshing film from Ireland’s top film makers.
Buskers is the story of Packo, a young Dubliner, and Milos, a Romanian immigrant, who battle to secure a space to beg at a Dublin train station. After a comical battle of fists and of wits, of sly tricks and hard blows, the boys find a truly special friendship in their common love of music.
The film features an incredible performances by child actor Stephen Moran and movie veteran John Kavanagh (Braveheart, The Black Dahlia).
Buskers was televised on Sky Movies in September 2001 and received a record viewer ship for a short film on Sky Television. It enjoyed its North American Premiere at the Palm Springs Short Film Festival in California on the 2nd of August 2000.
Since then ‘Buskers’ has made the official selection of the Edinburgh, Claremont Ferrand, Cologne, Flanders, Chicago, Brest, Bristol, Irish Reels, East Lansing, Washington, Sydney, Celtic, and Brisbane Film Festivals among others.

Distractions. I am a black belt in the art of daydreaming. The war that rages in the chasms (I read a book earlier..) of my subconscious is a relentless, yet a lethargic one. I think in a spider map format. Every single thought process in tangents. For instance last time I began work on writing my play…. this happened.
Then this happened. I retreated back into the proverbial man cave. Oh that play I’m working on? procrastination Forget about that! a 2 hour reading of the history of slavery on Wikipedia is a far more demanding work. It’s okay ,the play has only been scratching for freedom from my head for the past 5 years. Oh cool you have finally rented a space to write, wait….no WiFi connection on this floor? Better go down stairs and re-watch the research videos you already effortlessly can recite. First world problems eh?
But the tide is turning. I actually got work done. I even read a book instead of fail videos on YouTube. SUCCESS!. Vocabulary increased tenfold (never thought I’d write that). That theatre company I was dabbling in with my friend? Well I got a business oriented third collaborator!. As I am a rambling man, my words catch more excitement than putting them into action. One day is all it took in the comfortable creaky silence of a Georgian building, to put flesh and vitality to the company. Like I have said in previous posts… my old friend who geared me towards my theatre profession, gave me the rights to a play he wrote. I was fearful to say the least upon approaching it. It’s style is of spoken verse, the dialogue minimal and snappy. Almost can feel a Samuel Beckett air about the tone. The stage is sparse to say basically none at all. My fear was simply: How do I put on my own/a partnered style to it? Four hours of constant creative deliberations with my new collaborator Jemima Curran, it was clear. What was clear was… it was to be an enormous challenge.
The rewrites were immense, yet our theme clear. The challenge was not off-putting. I don’t think anything creatively is more exciting and infectious that a hard and tough process. Nothing easy is ever truly enjoyed. Or savoured. Even when the meeting ended we spent a another hour pouring over details. We were determined. Determined that a play like this can have legs put to it and made walk. My addictive personality feeds off this way of living. Once an agreement is set to accomplish this task….i won’t stop until its done. Even if it’s a failure. Then its a failure well-tried. As soon as that window passed…. a door opened.
A freed publicity post I sent around for underground theatre, got its first response. I was more than ecstatic when Ill Advised theatrecompany asked me to interview them and shed light on their foray into theatre. They are a musical theatre company hoping to set up cheap and easy to set up productions. Their show is on next year in the New Theatre and I hope to be there covering them. That will happen in the next two weeks so watch out for the interview! Personal issues have made me absent from the sites investment. Mainly family stuff, that I am not afraid to talk about. Just not on this post will I venture into it. Next week I will show the anguish that is within the family.
Since as I said the theatre company is being set up I am taking the next step with the site and making it a domain .com. I realise most of my posts is about auditions/notices. I hope with the site from now on to start documenting my theatre companies progression with rehearsals and auditions and obviously shameless self promotion. But this is where I ask for help…. I want to focus a lot more on underground theatre/film scene. I am Looking for guest or new writers to write on the blog on anything within underground theatre/film. It could be about you as an actor and the work you door the work your trying to get. The opinions or frustrations of being an actor in IrelandOr maybe you just like being a critic or a simply a person who just shares their view on and new and up and coming theatre/film. Please contact me on this if it interests you at all! And remember it can be on anything within them themes.
It not only helps you, but I believe this blog is a great idea for a medium that only focus on new talent… not already established ones. The actors and theatre companies that don’t have the money to promote themselves, this blog will do it for free. A resource for questions or queries on what kind of places to go for doing fundraisers. Writing about Theatre venues for new writers/companies that’s affordable to have. Putting up a weekly people and resource list for that theatre and film scene. Also spotlight on services and courses that aid new talent. So please get on board with me! It will benefit everyone in the end!
